The National Institute of Mental Health recently reported that binge eating disorder is now the most common type of eating disorder, with about 30 percent of those with the condition seeking treatment. Kara Richardson Whitely is an advocate with the Eating Recovery Center who dispels myths about binge eating disorder all while sharing her personal experiences with it. After a failed attempt at climbing Mount Kilimanjaro a second time, she fell into what she called her darkest period with binge eating and kept it all a secret from her loved ones. She will speak at an educational seminar March 17 in Sacramento promoting awareness of binge eating disorder to reduce the stigma of talking about it.
