The Sacramento Black Book Fair returns for its sixth year, celebrating the work of African-American authors, poets, and artists in the community. This year’s festival theme is “Creating a Legacy.” The fair features live music, poetry, games, storytelling and activities for the younger crowd at the Brickhouse Art Gallery Kid Zone.

The festival will feature events with labor historian Bill Fletcher Jr. (“Solidarity Divided: The Crisis in Organized Labor and A New Path Toward Social Justice”), filmmaker Christene Brown (“Another Planet”), and Kathy Marshall ("Finding Otho: The Search for Our Enslaved Williams Ancestors").

The Books On Parade will assemble at the Women’s Civic Improvement Center (WCIC) at 9:30 a.m., featuring music by the Natomas High School Nighthawk Band and Drum Corp. Community members are encouraged to donate books by black authors for the book drive.

The Sacramento Black Book Fair will host a Poetry & Music Festival at the Village Market Stage on 36th Street at 3rd Avenue in Sacramento from 10:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The entertainment lineup includes musical performances by SpaceWalker, Eric “EQ” Young, Jordan Nugent and The Band Hayez, plus poetry by Sean King, Khiry Malik, Anne Marie, and Joy Elan.

Sacramento Black Book fair organizer Faye Kennedy (Blue Nile Press) and participating author Frederick Foote return to Insight to preview the festivities. The events will be held May 31 and June 1 in Oak Park at the Women’s Civic Improvement Club (3555 3rd Ave. at Broadway & 35th St.).
