Teacher Strikes Across CA
Teachers in north Sacramento will go on strike this week. Twin Rivers United Educators notified the district they will walk out of the classroom on Thursday. Twin River Unified School District serves roughly 25,000 children and officials said schools will remain open. But this is far from an isolated case. Teachers in both Natomas and Washington Unified have voted overwhelmingly to strike. And it’s not a coincidence, but part of a coordinated statewide push from the California Teachers Association to boost salaries and benefits. New Colgate Powerhouse Disaster
Located 45 minutes east of Marysville, just south of New Bullards Bar Reservoir, a major rupture of a penstock pipe in the Yuba County foothills has caused significant damage to the New Colgate Powerhouse. The failure also swept oily debris into the North Yuba River, home to thousands of juvenile Spring and Fall-run Chinook and steelhead. We’ll get an update on the cleanup and the environmental response with Willie Whittlesey, General Manager of Yuba Water Agency. We’re also joined by Aaron Zettler-Mann, Executive Director of the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) which protects the Yuba River watershed and responded to the disaster.
Capitol PUNishment Comedy Show
Sacramento’s long running comedy show Capitol PUNishment is back again this month. And yes that is capital P-U-N, because unlike many other social settings, at this comedy show puns are encouraged! Taking their cues from the world of underground rap battles and professional wrestling, each month four contestants face off in a tournament to crown a pun champion. That champion then faces off against the bosses to see if they have what it takes to become a ‘Pun Master’ and take home the championship belt. Capitol PUNishment has its next show this Friday at the Comedy Spot in Sacramento. Co-producers of the show and the pun bosses themselves, Damian Harmony and Justine Lopez joined us to talk about the show’s nearly decade long history and this week’s show, which you can find tickets to here.
