When temperatures hit triple digits in Sacramento, people escape to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra foothills. That brings prosperity for many businesses, but amplifies the housing crunch for working families in the region.

In this installment of the collaboration between The View From Here: Place And Privilege and Insight, we'll discuss current housing issues and potential solutions with Heidi Hill Drum from the Tahoe Prosperity Center and Amy Kelley from the North Tahoe Family Resource Center.

Hill Drum says 70 percent of the homes in the basin are of the vacation variety and this adds to the region's severe housing shortage.

"There are a number of solutions being looked at currently," she says. "Placer County is looking at providing incentives for some of those second homeowners to rent their homes out to long-term residents."

Drum says there is also an effort to redevelop old, run-down motel properties into modern housing for seasonal workers and their families.

Kelley and Hill Drum talked about how families in the region have to share houses while a few blocks away, luxury vacation homes sit empty for weekend visitors.
