Lawmakers return from summer recess with an overwhelming agenda on their plate.

Aside from the series of bills regarding affordable housing legislation, questions remain about recall elections, Republican leadership and the success of the renewed Cap and Trade program.

State Government Reporter Ben Bradford gives the breakdown in this week's Capitol Chat.

*Note: Immediately after this segment first aired, Assembly Republicans held a surprise caucus meeting and voted to remove Mayes as leader at the end of the current legislative session. Nevada County Assemblyman Brian Dahle will replace him as Republican leader.

Now @ChadMayesCA rises to announce @BrianDahleCA as new @AssemblyGOP leader

— Ben Adler (@adlerben) August 24, 2017

.@BrianDahleCA is a @ChadMayesCA ally, so this allows @AssemblyGOP caucus to move forward without (perhaps) changing direction.

— Ben Adler (@adlerben) August 24, 2017

.@Rendon63rd: "I will miss working with @ChadMayesCA as @AssemblyGOP Leader. But make no mistake, the bromance will endure."

— Ben Adler (@adlerben) August 24, 2017

Here's why @ChadMayesCA has been battling not just for his @AssemblyGOP leadership but also the future of @CAGOP: https://t.co/ECoKIBuCQJ
