Green Valley Theatre Company presents “The Black Rider,” a musical nightmarish fairytale for adults.  The story is based on a German Folktale published in “The Book of Ghosts” (“Gespensterbuch”) around 1811-1815, and then adapted into the 1821 opera, “Der Freischütz,” by Carl Maria von Weber. The Green Valley Theatre Company production features a live orchestra and a campy, vaudeville style.

Author William S. Burroughs wrote the book for “The Black Rider” based on the opera, weaving several allusions to his own addiction into the script. Tom Waits wrote the music, recorded it in 1989 and released the album “The Black Rider” in 1993 on Island Records.

“The Black Rider” will be presented by Green Valley Theatre Company at Westminster Presbyterian Church on 1300 N Street in Sacramento on:

  • Aug. 17 @ 8:00 p.m.
  • Aug. 18 @ 8:00 p.m.
  • Aug. 19 @ 7:00 p.m.
  • Aug. 23 @ 8:00 p.m.
  • Aug. 24 @ 8:00 p.m.
