A UC Davis professor who is considered an authority on race and urban communities has released a new book that traces the social history of Harlem through the lens of one family. In “Down the Up Staircase,” Bruce Haynes and co-author Syma Solovitch examine the nature of status and success among the black middle class as it pertains to three generations of Haynes’ own family.
