Ricardo Tovar had never been to Meadowview before, but this week he attended a bingo night on Florin Road. Tovar, a journalism student and senior at Chico State, went with a goal in mind: capture the story of an immigrant. So he took his recording equipment, and that’s what he did.

Tovar is one of six students participating in NPR’s Next Generation Radio Project, known also as NextGen. Through the project, NPR stations throughout the country host weeklong pop-up training sessions for aspiring journalists to develop skills in digital journalism and audio storytelling. This gives them the opportunity to report and produce a multimedia story.

This past week, CapRadio hosted the last student cohort of the year. Their prompt was “First Days in America,” which required the NextGen participants to meet, interview and share the stories of immigrants in Sacramento. Tovar’s story took place at Florin Road Bingo, where he spoke with Victor Igbinedion from Nigeria. Tovar will join Insight to discuss the week, along with NextGen’s Managing Editor, Traci Tong. She’ll discuss the program’s nearly 20-year history.

CapRadio’s latest podcast, Making Meadowview, focuses on the stories of the people living in the South Sacramento neighborhood where Tovar’s story takes place. A new episode of Making Meadowview is released each Thursday.
