Jeanne Alongi and her son, Michael, wind down from a day at work and school.

Andrew Nixon / Capital Public Radio

Michael Alongi was born in a female body, but he discovered at an early age that there are social and medical barriers to expressing his male identity.

CapRadio healthcare reporter Sammy Caiola profiled Michael and his mother Jeanne in December 2018. They spoke frankly about the challenges of navigating a healthcare system run by doctors who are still catching up with the concept of “non-binary.”

They joined Insight with Beth Ruyak to share Michael’s story, starting with his earliest experiences trying to fit in.
