Library of Congress

One of the challenges in recognizing the achievements of women in public spaces is the ways women’s civic participation has been limited. They couldn’t vote until 1920 or serve in all aspects of the military until 2015. Women’s race and class have also limited participation in many public activities.

Teresa Bergman is a professor at the University of the Pacific in Stockton and Chair of the Communication Department. She has a new book out titled, The Commemoration of Women in the United States: Remembering Women in Public Space.

Also, the California State Archives has released its latest digital exhibit to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the state’s ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote nationwide. Bergman will discuss her work and its resonance with the exhibit at the State Archives.
