Bobby Hutcherson performing in Old Sacramento in the early 2000's Vibraphone virtuoso, celebrated composer and NEA Jazz Master Bobby Hutcherson died this week at the age of 75. Jazz music director Gary Vercelli joins us to remember the musician who inspired many. We’ll listen to music from Hutcherson’s long and varied career and hear how his virtuosic technique and creative approach altered the course of the vibraphone in jazz. Some of the selections we'll feature: Little B’s Poem Herzog Dear Lord Bouquet Phantom Dance Sacramento pianist and educator Joe Gilman toured and recorded with Bobby Hutcherson for ten years. "Bobby was a guiding light in my life," wrote Gilman on his Facebook page after hearing news of Bobby's death. "He was a very humble, very kind, very supportive, and very dedicated man. I learned so much about music from him, but also so much about how to be a grownup. How to be a man. How to treat people with kindness, and how to forgive." Gilman is featured as a member of the Bobby Hutcherson Quartet in this video.
