Author Julie Otsuka

Distinguished novelist, Julie Otsuka, explores the themes of Japanese internment during World War II and the immigration of picture brides, in her award-winning novels, When the Emperor Was Divine (Knopf, 2002) and The Buddha in the Attic (Knopf, 2011).

Otsuka was born and raised in California and drew from her own family history for the storyline in her first book. Her second novel was inspired by stories she heard while on tour with that book and then researched in great depth.

The author joins host, Beth Ruyak, in the studio for Insight, and then onstage in Auburn, Wednesday evening, for Auburn’s One Book One Community event.
