For more than four decades, photographer Veryl Oakland has captured on film some of the biggest names in jazz. From Sarah Vaughan and Stan Getz to today’s rising stars, Oakland’s black and white photos reveal the soul and honesty of the art form’s greatest practitioners.  Recently, the self-taught photographer sat down with Capital Public Radio’s Gary Vercelli to discuss his career and his new exhibit, now on display at CapRadio.  Oakland described his transformation from jazz fan to professional jazz photographer. That happened after he submitted his photograph of the eccentric jazz musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk to Down Beat magazine.
