Insight Goes To Yosemite: Stories From Groveland

This week on News Network, Gus Thomson joins us from the Auburn Journal to discuss the Rim Fire aftermath and a recently approved plan to restore land burned by last year's American Fire by the Forest Service.  Auburn continues to prohibit fireworks during the days leading up to Independence Day -- specifically in unincorporated areas -- which pose a fire threat during the drought.

For more on the drought, we'll speak with former Calaveras Enterprise editor, Joel Metzger, about the impact of the drought and mandatory conservation measures in Calaveras County.

The Iron Door Saloon is located about 20 miles from a Yosemite National Park entrance. It is said to be the oldest saloon in California and continuously draws people from near and far. At the saloon, Insight spoke with patrons who recounted stories about the Rim Fire, which burned more than 200,000 acres.

A new report by The Center for Investigative Reporting has found that $600 million in education assistance to Iraq and Afghanistan veterans has been spent on California schools so substandard that they failed to qualify for state financial aid.

The story is premiering on CIR's new radio program, Reveal. Aaron Glantz covers veterans and domestic military issues for The Center for Investigative Reporting and wrote the article about huge sums of GI Bill funds being used in for-profit schools in California.

Konstantin Soukhovetski is coming back to the Sacramento area for Music in the Mountains “Gershwin Extravaganza.”
