CT Scans for Smokers A federal task force is recommending annual CT scans for millions of smokers and former smokers to look for early signs of lung cancer, a move that could prevent some of the 160,000 annual lung cancer deaths in the United States. Some critics worry tax payers will pick up the extra costs of the CT scans under the new Affordable Care Act. The 16-member U.S. Preventive Services Task Force gave the lung cancer screening test a grade of "B," and under the ACA insurers are required to cover preventive services with a "B" or higher. A lung scan costs about $300 to $500. Lung cancer deaths in the United States exceed the total number of deaths from breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing lung cancer, resulting in about 85 percent of lung cancers in the United States. We'll talk with Dr. David Gandara from UC Davis about the results and what it means.

The Center for Investigative Reporting and CNN poured through thousands of government records and dozens of interviews with counselors, patients and regulators to reveal a widespread scheme to bilk the state’s Medicaid system. We’ll talk with CIR reporter Will Evans about what they discovered.
