CT Scans for Smokers A federal task force is recommending annual CT scans for millions of smokers and former smokers to look for early signs of lung cancer, a move that could prevent some of the 160,000 annual lung cancer deaths in the United States. Some critics worry tax payers will pick up the extra costs of the CT scans under the new Affordable Care Act. The 16-member U.S. Preventive Services Task Force gave the lung cancer screening test a grade of "B," and under the ACA insurers are required to cover preventive services with a "B" or higher. A lung scan costs about $300 to $500. Lung cancer deaths in the United States exceed the total number of deaths from breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing lung cancer, resulting in about 85 percent of lung cancers in the United States. We'll talk with
