Prop. 8 and DOMA Follow Up The Supreme Court of the United States issued rulings yesterday in two cases relating to same-sex marriage. The high court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, claiming it was unconstitutional for the federal government to make any law singling out people recognized as equal at the state level. In the case of Proposition 8, the court declined to rule saying it had no standing to do so. That decision allows the state of California the opportunity to begin moving forward with issuing licenses for same-sex, which it plans to do in 25 days after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals lifts its stay. To find out more about how these two rulings will actually affect people in California, we’ll talk with UC Davis Law Professor and Dean for Academic Affairs Vikram Amar and The Atlantic’s Business Reporter and Associate Editor Jordan Weissmann. We’ll also hear from a woman who was planning on civil union with her partner this weekend at the State Capitol about what these decisions mean for their family.
Library of Congress Institute Three local teachers - Heidi Painter, Kelly Hillesland and Nicole Kukral - just returned from a five-day national education institute in Washington, D.C. The three of them were part of a specially selected group of K-12 teachers to attend the Library of Congress teaching with Primary Sources Summer Teacher Institute from June 17 to 21. They join us today to talk about what they learned about the most effective ways to utilize the Library's primary sources in classroom instruction, which is especially important as California schools transition to new modes of teaching with the Common Core Standards.
Michael Spurgeon A professor of English at American River College is releasing his first novel on July 1. Michael Spurgeon's "Let the Water Hold Me Down," is set against the historical backdrop of the 1994 Zapatista uprising in Mexico. We’ll talk with Spurgeon about the book, where he draws his inspiration and why it took him 10 years to write it.
