Sacramento County District Attorney-Elect Anne Marie Schubert (right) stands with Jan Scully (left), who currently holds the office.

Ken Rudin, known to NPR listeners from his many years talking all things politics with Neal Conan on "Talk of the Nation," joins Insight host Beth Ruyak for our signature segment that puts California politics in the context of the national scene.

He'll talk about the California Chrome's attempt to win the Triple Crown and the famous rant made by the the owner Steve Coburn. Ken Rudin will also talk about noted figures who made the headlines this weekend including Hilary Clinton, Bowe Bergdahl and Tracy Morgan, who is still in intensive care.

Now that the new Sacramento District Attorney, Anne Marie Schubert,  has been elected, Insight will dive into the issues confronting her.  We will talk with McGeorge School of Law Professor Michael Vitiello and Santa Clara Law Professor David Ball about how evidence and attitudes around criminal justice have changed and how mass incarceration policies have affected the US.

Gay romance is a genre in literature that’s quickly gaining popularity. And although the characters in these books are male, the majority of the authors and readers are female. Gay romance author Amy Lane, who lives in Citrus Heights with her husband and four kids, says strong female leads in fantasy fiction titles like “The Hunger Games" have shattered the traditional gender archetypes that restrained female characters.

This new archetypal freedom, Lane argues, is what’s led readers to discard the traditional romantic notion of a valiant man swooping in to rescue a virginal female victim, and accept the type of male-male romance she writes instead. Kim Fielding is another gay romance author who also lives in the Sacramento region who’s known for her novels “Stasis,” “Flux” and “Equipoise.” She joins us with Lane for a discussion on this growing genre of romance literature.
