American composer Christopher Rouse completed his 11-movement suite of original Christmas carols titled “Karolju” [“kah-ROLL-you”] in 1990. Unusually, that title is a made-up word, as are his original texts — save for an occasional seasonal word — written to sound like carols in different languages such as French, Spanish, Russian, German, Italian and so on. Dedicated to his daughter for her first Christmas in 1990, “Karolju” for choir and orchestra is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
