Composer Lowell Liebermann | photo: Joseph Moran
O glad, exulting, culminating song!
A vigor more than earth's is in thy notes,
Joy! joy! in freedom, worship, love! joy in the ecstasy of life!
Joy! joy! all over joy!
- The final stanza of text in Liebermann's Symphony No. 2.
Setting assorted lines of text adapted by the composer from the poems of Walt Whitman, the 1999 Symphony No. 2 by American composer Lowell Liebermann was written on a commission from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for their centennial anniversary and to mark the new millennium. To further celebrate the advance of modern times, the premiere concert in February 2000 was one of the first-ever orchestral concerts streamed live online. Liebermann’s Symphony No. 2 is today’s Memorial Day Midday Masterpiece.
