Beethoven wrote his String Quartet No. 15 in 1825 after suffering a lengthy intestinal disorder he feared would be fatal. Upon recovering, for the 3rd movement of the quartet he inscribed the movement with the words, "Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in der lydischen Tonart" ("Holy song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian mode").
