Detail of the Portinari Altarpiece (c.1475) by Hugo van der Goes
Handel’s oratorio “Messiah” is a meditation on Jesus as Messiah in Christian theology. The work is in three major parts, from prophecy, annunciation and nativity in Part I, through Passion, death, resurrection and ascension in Part II (with the “Hallelujah Chorus” concluding this Part as a statement of glory), concluding in Part III with resurrection, redemption and victory over sin and death and a brilliant musical acclamation of Christ’s glorification in heaven. Part I, with the "Hallelujah Chorus" from part II - as are often performed together this time of year - is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
