Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)
By the middle of the 19th century, French audiences were almost exclusively interested in opera. At this time, composer Camille Saint-Saëns almost exclusively made a case for French chamber music which was seen, at the time, as a mostly German endeavor. Just before age 30, in 1864, Saint-Saëns composed his Piano Trio No. 1 and it was works like this of such melody and charm that earned him the occasional moniker of the French Mozart or the French Mendelssohn. That Piano Trio No. 1 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
