"Macbeth apercevant le spectre de Banco" by Théodore Chassériau [1854]
Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70, No. 1, earned its nickname, the “Ghost” Trio, for its slow and dark middle movement. The name appears to have originated with a description of the music by Beethoven’s student, Carl Czerny, as reminiscent of Hamlet’s ghost. But the actual ghostly music may have had its origin in Beethoven’s ideas for an opera on Shakespeare’s Macbeth that he was contemplating at the time. Beethoven’s notebook sketches for the ghostly second movement contain a reference to Macbeth. He may have considered this music for a scene with the three witches or with Banquo’s ghost from the Shakespeare play. Beethoven’s “Ghost” Trio is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
