Czech composer Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 has been called his equivalent to Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6, but very much of the Bohemian countryside. Written in the summer and early autumn of 1889 at his summer home, Dvořák’s Eighth’s alternates in moods from pastoral scenes to Czech folk dances contrasted against periods of drama. It’s like a study on the balance of nature and life. In a recent July 2022 release from the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
