Philip Glass met Ravi Shankar in Paris in 1965 when Shankar needed someone to transcribe the movie score he was writing into western notation. The two became friends and Glass regarded Shankar as something of a mentor.

25 years later the two would work together again on the album "Passages" where one composer would create a work based on a theme the other had written. Hear the track "Sadhanipa" from that album coming up at 6:35 p.m. on your new program for contemporary classical music and the classical adjacent, Saturdays at 6 on CapRadio.

Also on the program music from Steve Reich, John Adams, Missy Mazzoli, Julia Wolfe, and an operatic tribute to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
