Cynthia Harris is with AAA. She says the month-over-month increase is even higher in the Sacramento area.
"Today Sacramento is registering $3.76 for a gallon of unleaded regular. Now that's a 32 cent jump from a month ago, that is quite a jump for this region. Something very important though according to analysts, we are seeing a surge in gas consumption and that is because Californians are driving more in the last several weeks."
Driving more, she says, because of the mild winter and fewer storms to keep people off the roads.
Harris says more consumer demand is one reason prices are going up. Another reason is the seasonal oil refinery maintenance and required switchover to produce summer-blend gasoline.
She points out, however, that gas prices locally and statewide are still about 30 cents lower than this time last year.
