The Railroad Connection

The Coronation Scot, 1937, with service from London to Glasgow (Artist Bryan de Grineau)

As important as they are, airplanes and automobiles have never loomed as large in classical music as have trains and railways

And what a variety of works they’ve inspired!

In this hour, a choral salute by Hector Berlioz, a polka by Johann Strauss Jr., and a trip through the Brazilian countryside by Heitor Villa-Lobos, plus works by Rossini, Grainger, Reich, Honegger, and more.
