The Word Connection

What's in a word? A challenge for a composer if it's just one that's repeated over and over

Setting words to music is a challenge for any composer, but consider the effort when it’s just one word.

How do you repeat a single word and not make it tedious? Or make an important word stand out, musically, among all the others?

In this hour, we’ll hear how it’s done—and done well—in famous works by Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Wagner, Bernstein, and more.
