The Don Quixote Connection

Don Quixote, illustrator unknown (U.S. 1874)

Few works of literature have had the impact of Miguel de Cervantes’ great comic novel, Don Quixote, whose title character becomes obsessed with tales of knights, ladies and chivalry, and sets out to recreate them all.

The story has been adapted and dramatized, danced and painted—and has inspired works of instrumental and vocal music—for more than 400 years.

In this hour, Don Quixote in works by Purcell, Telemann, Mendelssohn, de Falla, Strauss, Rodrigo and more.
