Jasper, a plain-colored Amazon parrot at the Sacramento Zoo - has died after a two-year battle with a heart condition. The zoo says Jasper was euthanized Monday.

If you went to the Sacramento Zoo and heard a bird saying "Hello," "Meow," or "Here, Kitty, Kitty," that was Jasper. The plain-colored Amazon parrot was a character, well-known for his loud vocalizations, chatting away with visitors.

Two years ago, Jasper was diagnosed with a severe heart condition. The zoo says treatments and care Jasper received for his cardiac condition controled many of his symptoms. But a recent exam revealed significant worsening of his cardiac disease and development of liver cancer.

The zoo says Jasper was humanely euthanized Monday afternoon. A full necropsy, or animal autopsy, will be performed at UC Davis.

Plain-colored Amazon parrots are found in the wild in the Amazon rainforests and foothills of South America as well as parts of Central America and Mexico.
