April is Jazz Appreciation Month and CapRadio will celebrate by featuring many of the local jazz concerts we’ve presented and recorded over the past 45 years.
Dating back to the early 1980’s, CapRadio’s hosts and engineers have placed themselves right at the bandstands of some of the best live jazz concerts here in Sacramento. Locations include Waterfront Park in Old Sacramento, the Radisson Hotel’s Edgewater Ballroom for the Jazz Jubilee, the On Broadway Bar & Cafe and right in our own backyard at Sacramento State University.
Over the past 45 years, performers from all over the country have come to California’s capital city. Many of them are featured regularly on Excellence in Jazz, including The Hot Club of San Francisco, The Black Market Jazz Orchestra, Kenny Washington, Sandy Cressman, Rebecca Kilgore, Archie Shepp, Ali Reyerson, Bobby Hutcherson, George Cables, Ray Obiedo, Anat Cohen and many more.
In addition to touring artists, we’ve also recorded many of the world class performers in the local Sacramento jazz scene, including Dr. Joe Gilman, Steve Homan and many of the bands that played regularly at the annual Sacramento Jazz Jubilee.
Join us every Saturday night beginning April 5th at 8 p.m. on 88.9 FM and on capradio.org as we take a look back through the archives of the best performances in local live jazz.
To kick things off, we’ll be featuring pianist John Hicks, flutist Ali Reyerson & guitarist Joe Beck, vocalist Jamie Davis, guitarist Steve Homan and the Capital Jazz Project!
