Cal Fire is among nine agencies recruiting firefighters at a career expo Saturday in Sacramento.
The Career Expo is an opportunity for would-be firefighters to meet with fire department reps and find out first-hand - and hands-on - what the job is about.
"The expo is aimed at putting those who are interested, especially women and veterans, face-to-face with working firefighters," says Yvonne de la Peña, Executive Director of the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee, which sponsors the event. "And we have recruiters represented from 10 different fire departments."
"We give them exposure to the physical ability test and then we also give them a little bit of knowledge about what they can expect on a written test, we have some hands-on demonstrations," says de la Peña.

Along with demonstrations, candidates can see and work with the "tools of the trade."
She says there will also be a video and presentations about what it's like to be on the "front lines" as a firefighter.
The Firefighter Career Expo is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at 2560 River Plaza in Sacramento.
