Andrew Nixon / Capital Public Radio News

Incumbent Democratic Congressman Ami Bera now leads Republican challenger Doug Ose by 697 votes in the race for the 7th Congressional District.

Ose led the contest by 3,000 votes a week ago, and by 711 votes on Wednesday.

There are still about 4,500 provisional ballots remaining to be counted. About 2,200 of those are in District 7.

Provisional ballots are cast when a voter's name is not on the list of registered voters at a polling place.

There are also about 2,000 vote-by-mail ballots remaining. They are not separated by congressional district.

Nearly 312,000 ballots have been counted in Sacramento County. There are more than 680,000 people registered to vote.
