Sam Starks is one of the organizers of the 33rd annual March for the Dream and Diversity Expo. Starks says the goal is to spread King's message to the next generation.
"Not just for young people of color but for all Americans. The notion of equity, justice and fairness, it means something for maybe the Hmong immigrant or the Latino immigrant. Those messages are really what it's about. We like to say 'honoring the past, impacting the future.'"
Starks says, as an African-American man, it's moving for him to see young people marching alongside police officers.
"You have to understand what that means because sometimes in the community law enforcement is not a positive thing. And yet when they see a police officer walking side-by-side for something that their mom or grandparents said 'this is important to us' and it's transformative."
The march starts at 8:30 a.m. in Oak Park at the intersection of Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and 8th Avenue.
The route includes Freeport Boulevard, Land Park Drive, Broadway, 10th Street and L Street, ending at the Sacramento Convention Center on J Street.
That's where a "Diversity Expo" will be held with speakers, music and resources on health and education.
Today also marks a "day of service" when about 500 people are expected to volunteer at various work sites around town, including cleaning up parks and working at food banks.

The south area march will depart from the Oak Park Community Center, 3425 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. at 8:30 a.m. and travel to the second meeting point at Sacramento City College, 3835 Freeport Blvd. Marchers will travel the following route:
-South on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
-West on 14th Avenue / Sutterville Road
-Sutterville Road to Freeport Boulevard
-West on 13th Avenue to north on Land Park Drive
-West on Broadway to Northbound 10th Street to L Street
-East on L Street to 13th Street
-Northbound on 13th Street to the Sacramento Convention Center
The north area march is scheduled to leave from Grant High School, 1400 Grand Ave., at 8:30 a.m. The marchers will travel the following route:
-East on South Avenue to Marysville Boulevard
-South on Marysville Boulevard as it turns into Del Paso Boulevard
-Continuing south on Del Paso Boulevard to south end of Northgate Boulevard and onto Highway 160 inbound
-Continue on Highway 160 as it turns into 12th Street and continue south on 12th Street to K Street
-East on K Street to the Sacramento Convention Center
