Franz Krommer (1759-1831)
Born the year of Handel’s death and died a few years after Beethoven, Franz Krommer was one of the most successful and influential Czech composers active in Vienna at the turn of the 18th century. He composed at least 9 symphonies, dozens of concertos, chamber works for string ensemble including many quartets and works for winds. His music was disseminated widely and later in life was awarded many honors from multiple countries. Simply stated, a Sinfonía Concertante is a concerto for multiple soloists. Krommer’s 1808 Sinfonía Concertante for violin, flute and clarinet in E-flat is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
