Bohemian-born composer Jan Zelenka served as a musician with the Dresden Court for about 35 years where he also composed music for the court church and was the official “church composer” for his final twelve years (1733 to his death in 1745). But when the elector prince for whom he worked spent two years in Vienna to court the young archduchess Maria Josepha, Zelenka was part of the prince’s retinue and wrote dance music for social events including his Capriccio No. 4. With challenging parts for two natural horns, it’s today's Midday Masterpiece at 2pm.
