American composer Christopher Rouse in 1990 completed his 11-movement suite of original Christmas carols titled “Karolju” [“kah-ROLL-you”]. Unusually, that’s a made-up word, as are his original texts — save for an occasional seasonal word — written to sound like carols of different languages such as French, Spanish, Russian, German, Italian and so on. Dedicated to his daughter for her first Christmas in 1990, “Karolju” for choir and orchestra is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
