The four year old daughter of Czech composer Bedřich Smetana died of Scarlet Fever when he was 30 years old. He poured his grief into his Piano Trio in G-minor; but there are sadly sweet musical passages, too, and a final uplifting flourish in affirmation of his love for her that can never be diminished. Smetana’s only Piano Trio with the Neave Trio is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
