The inaugural MoonPay X Games in Sacramento wrapped over the weekend featuring extreme sports and live-music, marking the official debut of the X Games League.
Over 100 skateboarders, BMX and Moto X riders from around the world took over Cal Expo for the action-packed 3-day event, bringing huge crowds of spectators who were wow-ed by multiple (and seemingly impossible) “never-done-before” tricks.
Organizers debuted a new league format for several events where athletes earned points for their teams based on individual performance. Teams included New York, Los Angles, São Paulo, and Japan.
CEO of X Games Jeremy Bloom said Sacramento has become the “epicenter” of action sports for the weekend.
“The last X Games we had up in Aspen had 15.3 million people watching on TV and we reached 120 countries, over 100 million views across digital and social,” Bloom said. “This community will be center stage this weekend, because of the things that these incredible athletes are embarking on, and trying to do.”
The first two event nights were capped off by electronic artist Kaskade Grammy-award-winning producer DJ Mustard and EDM artist Subtronics.
Signature athletes that competed include BMX rider Ryan Williams and skateboarder Sky Brown for team Sao Paulo, skateboarders Chloe Covell and Momiji NIshiya for team New York, skateboarder Arisa Trew, BMX riders Perris Benegas, and Brady Baker for team Los Angeles.
Skateboarding
The first events kicked off on Friday where the league crowned its first champions in Men’s BMX Park, Women’s Skateboard Park and Moto X Best Whip.
16-year-old Australian skateboarder Arisa Trew took home gold in Women’s Skateboard Park on Friday. She also took home gold in Women’s Skateboard Vert Best Trick hitting a Switch McTwist in the first run marking her 10th career X Games gold medal.

Davis local Nyjah Huston competed in the Men’s Skateboarding Street Best Trick competition. He is the captain for team New York and he told CapRadio that Sacramento is the perfect place to host the X Games.
“I really don’t think there could be a better place for it because I don’t think there’s ever been a big contest in Sacramento from what I can remember,” Huston said. “So many great skaters came out of Sacramento, me coming out of Davis… these are the type of areas that need more events like this.”

Huston earned a silver medal during his run for team New York while his 16-year-old teammate Ginwoo Onodara struck gold. His run included several included a halfcab crooked grind on the flatbar and a switch frontside kickflip.
Thrasher skateboarder of the year Chris Joslin for team Tokyo also competed in Men’s Skateboarding Street Best Trick finishing outside of the podium top three. He mentioned to CapRadio that competition has never been his specialty.
“I've always enjoyed skateboarding, and when I come to these, I feel like I limit myself,” he said. “I've enjoyed pushing myself outside of these, and so that's just where my heart lies.”
BMX and Moto X
Ryan Williams from team Sao Paulo took home two gold medals in BMX Park and Dirt Best Tricks on Friday and Monday. He hit a 540 frontflip flair on the vert wall in his second run on Saturday and is now a 13-time X Games Gold medal winner.

Auburn resident and New Jersey local Brady Baker finished with gold in BMX Dirt after landing a Tailwhip twister and finished with silver in Dirt Best Tricks behind Williams. He told CapRadio previously that the games in Sacramento feel like a local event.
Moto X competition also happened over the weekend although they’re not officially a part of the X Games League.
Julien Vanstippen from Belgium finished with a gold medal on Friday for Moto X Best Whip and Patrick Evans from Huntington Beach finished with a gold medal in Moto X Best Trick.
