Sacramento State’s football team has hired former University of Las Vegas football offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brennan Marion to become the school's 13th head coach in the football program's history.
Marion will take over the program after the Hornets finished their season 3-9. Former head coach Andy Thompson resigned and joined the Stanford Cardinal with former Hornets head coach Troy Taylor in early December.
Marion is known for the Rebels' uptempo “Go-Go Offense,” which in 2023 earned him the Mountain West Coordinator of the Year award.
UNLV had a 19-8 overall record in two seasons with Marion as the Rebels' offensive coordinator. Before that, Marion was the receivers coach for universities in Hawaii, Pittsburgh, and Texas.
The coach also has ties to California: He was head coach at Saint Patrick Saint Vincent High School in Vallejo and spent time as the receivers coach at The Harker High School in San Jose and West Valley Community College in Saratoga.
“God is good! 10 years ago I was a high school head coach in Northern California, don’t tell me my dreams don’t come true! Jeremiah 29!!” Marion wrote on X.
Sac State Athletics Director Mark Orr said in a press release that he’s thrilled to announce Marion as the next football coach and is confident that the coach will help the student-athletes in the program reach and surpass their ambitions on and off the field.
"Coach Marion is the perfect fit for our football program, our department, our University, and our community,” Orr said. “His demonstrated success in recruiting promising student-athletes and maximizing their talents will help us return our football program to winning conference championships.”
Marion said in the press release that Sac State is fully invested in becoming a nationally known football program.
“My family and I can't wait to serve the student-athletes of this program and the Sacramento community. As a University, we're going to write history and work tirelessly to build something that the community will be proud of for generations to come.”
Sac State was reportedly interested in former NFL quarterback Michael Vick last week. President Luke Wood confirmed that the school had talks with Vick, but he ultimately accepted a head coaching job at Norfolk State in his home state of Virginia.
The school is looking to join the Pac-12 football conference and has raised $50 million in NIL money to compete at the highest level of collegiate competition, FBS.
