A candidate running for congress is trying to make a name for himself on his first foray into politics. His major fundraiser is raising money by giving away guns.
Alex Appleby is running on the Libertarian ticket for the 9th Congressional District seat which represents most of San Joaquin County. He is an army veteran who served in Iraq and he says he is a big believer in the Second Amendment.
With that in mind, Appleby will give five 9mm handguns to major donors and will raffle off another at a fundraiser.
"I don't want to offend anybody and so if somebody doesn't want to own a gun that's fine,” says Appleby. “I think they should know how to protect themselves against somebody that does have a gun, so having training, self defense training, and safety courses, I think would be important whether or not you want a gun."
Appleby says the guns would only be given after a legally required background check and a waiting period.
