Bonney Field Expansion Approved

  •  Bob Moffitt
Friday, December 12, 2014 | Sacramento, CA

The Cal Expo Board of Directors has unanimously approved a proposal to increase Sacramento Republic FC's home by as many as 3,500 seats. Bonney Field currently seats 8,000 people.

Concessionaire, Ovations Fanfare requested the expansion, which will add about a half-acre to the area leased from the State of California. Cal Expo will receive an additional $25,000 in rent -to $100,000- under the new deal.

Expansion includes new seats, along with the re-configuration of some existing seats. The number of new seats could be as few as 2,500 depending on a bleacher manufacturer's recommendation.

Sac Republic FC ownership has made no secret of its intent to expand seating at Cal Expo.

The team played its first few games before crowds of about 20,000 people at Hughes Stadium on the Sacramento City College campus, but moved to Cal Expo when Major League Soccer (MLS) told the team the field was too small.

Sacramento is vying to be an MLS expansion franchise.

Sac Republic FC says more than 7,200 season tickets have been sold for the 2015 season.
