Major League Soccer Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott has been in town since yesterday. He was greeted by cheering Sacramento Republic FC fans at three events including a farewell stop today at the Railyards in Sacramento. Abbott says he hasn't "experienced anything quite like it."
"The love that people have for this city was really quite compelling. That was one thing I learned. Secondly, until you see the site, you don't really have a sense for it. And so, I was in a building yesterday with a view of the site and you can see how proximate it is to downtown, how it's connected to downtown and so, just being able to see it really brought it to life for me."
Abbott says he appreciated Elk Grove's sales pitch, but thought the proposed stadium in Sacramento's Railyards was more in line with what the MLS is looking for.
Sacramento Republic FC and the City of Sacramento are making their case to be one of four expansion clubs MLS will grant to begin operation by 2020.
Abbott gave no timeline for a decision, but did say the league would continue conversations with the team and the City.
