The Guy West Bridge is getting a make-over. Repairs began early this month and a series of weekend bridge closures start next Saturday.

The bridge will be closed from 6 a.m. Saturday, July 26 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 27. The H Street Bridge will provide a detour across the American River, according to the City Of Sacramento Public Works Department.

The paint removal process will take four weekend closures, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

"The Guy West Bridge is one of the few replicas of the Golden Gate Bridge. The restoration project will include new paint of the original color – International Orange – and restoration of suspension cables and rope connections, bridge deck and railing maintenance, and structural frame repairs that collectively will ensure the continued safe performance of the bridge," the Public Works department wrote in a statement.

The bridge crosses the American River, connecting the Sac State campus with University Avenue.
