State Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles, left, a candidate for Secretary of State, makes his opening statement during a candidates debate held by the Sacramento Press Club in Sacramento, Calif., Wednesday, April 23, 2014.

In the Controller’s race there was fierce competition to be among the top two finishers. Four candidates hovered around 20 percent for much of the night, with Republican Ashley Swearengin eventually finishing in first. The race for second remains a dead heat.

Swearingen leads the pack, with 24.4 percent of the vote. Democratic Assembly Speaker John Perez has 21.7 percent of the vote, Republican David Evans has 21.6 percent of the vote, and Democrat Betty Yee has 21.5 percent of the vote.

In the Secretary of State Race Democratic Senator Alex Padilla and Republican Pete Peterson will move on to the general election in November. Peterson is already taking aim at his opponent.

"I really do believe that he sees this office as a stepping-stone and I continue to see it as a dream job," says Peterson.

But it was Democratic Senator Leland Yee who was generating the most buzz. Yee received about 10 percent of the vote, despite having dropped out of the race after being arrested on corruption charges.

Lt. Governor Gavin Newsome will compete for reelection against Republican Ron Nehring in November. Democratic Attorney General Kamala Harris finished far ahead of her closest challenger, Republican Ronald Gold, but the two will still go to a run-off.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson was the only state-wide candidate who could have won his race outright. But he fell a bit short of reelection with just 47 percent of the vote. He’ll face Marshall Tuck in November.
