CapRadio Classical Celebrates July 4 By Showcasing Great American Composers

Sacramento, Calif. – June 30, 2016:  From Gershwin and Copland to Williams and Glass, daylong salute honors more than two dozen acclaimed American composers.

When you think of the Fourth of July and music, John Philip Sousa probably comes to mind. And you will hear a Sousa march or two this Monday on CapRadio 88.9 FM Sacramento. But Sousa is just one of the more than two dozen American composers we’ll feature throughout the day, including Aaron Copland, John Williams, William Grant Still, Joan Tower, Philip Glass, George Gershwin, Scott Joplin, Stephen Foster, William Schuman, Charles Ives and more.

“There are so many great works in the classical repertoire written by American composers,” says CapRadio’s classical content coordinator and host Cale Wiggins. “We’ve put together quite a variety, including a new recording of a piece by John Williams composed for “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. We’ve included Gershwin’s Piano Concerto, Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” and a few surprise pieces by Gordon Getty, Joan Tower and Philip Glass. The day’s programming is a great reminder of the depth and breadth of great music created by American composers.”

Carl Watanabe, Devin Yamanaka and Victor Forman are your hosts for our Independence Day celebration from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with one to two works by American composers featured each hour.

Wherever you are this Fourth of July, take CapRadio with you and celebrate America by celebrating American composers.  Listen at 88.9 FM Sacramento/Stockton, 91.7 FM Groveland/Sonora, 88.7 FM Sutter/Yuba City or stream us online at  www.capradio.org.
