Police say the man suspected of stabbing local musicians in Midtown this past week -- an assault the department is classifying as a hate crime -- has turned himself in.
Timothy Brownell, 25, is charged with a hate crime and assault with a deadly weapon.
Officers responded to midtown Sunday night after receiving a report of a stabbing.
Two of the victims, Alex Lyman and Blake Abbey, posted on social media that the suspect made a comment about skinny jeans and used "sexual orientation epithets" before the attacked. A third person was also injured.
After the initial report, officers were tipped off about Brownell's alleged involvement, according to police. They found a firearm at Brownell's residence that was unrelated to the attack and officers placed him under arrest for illegal possession of a firearm. He was later released after posting $50,000 for bail.
After re-interviewing the victims, the police department later reclassified the attack as a hate crime and issued a warrant for Brownell's arrest.
As of Tuesday night, Brownell has turned himself in and is now in custody at the Sacramento County Jail. He is being held on $1 million bail.
