Bassist Charles Mingus is widely considered to be one of the greatest musicians and most prolific composers in jazz history. Mingus, who passed away in 1979, continues to inspire musicians around the world, including vocalist Ellen Johnson. The northern California-based Johnson is appearing in a concert at Auburn State Theatre on Saturday, February 29th that will feature vocal interpretations of Mingus’ compositions. She’ll be joined on stage by saxophonist Don Braden, pianist Rick Helzer, basses John Lauffenburger and drummer Gary Newmark. You’ll find concert and ticket details here.
