The California Legislature is focusing on ways to advance the progress last session to address the statewide housing shortage.

San Francisco Sen. Scott Weiner has introduced a controversial new bill — SB 827 — that could drastically alter local zoning rules. If enacted, it could permit dense apartment buildings near existing public transit stops, even if the local zoning rules only permit single family dwellings.
