Alfred Lion (pictured here with saxophonist Hank Mobley) was born on this day in 1908. Lion founded the legendary Blue Note record label in 1939 purely as a labor of love. Lion's painstaking production style and attention to detail distinguished his product from that of his competitors. His willingness to seek the advice of the musicians he documented and his plain old "good ears" led Lion and Francis Wolff to build a jazz empire. Throughout tonight's program, we'll feature classic Blue Note recordings from Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Andrew Hill, Wayne Shorter, Art Blakey, Bud Powell, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell, and many others.
